Patient Care Goals
Decrease discomfort secondary to nausea and vomiting
Patient Presentation
Inclusion Criteria
Currently nauseated and/or vomiting
Exclusion Criteria

Patient Management
Assessment
- Routine patient care (vital signs)
- History and physical examination focused on potential causes of nausea and vomiting (e.g. gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, gynecologic, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia)
Treatment and Interventions
- Anti-emetic medication
- Ondansetron
- Adult:
- 4mg IV/PO/SL (IV formulation)
- 4 mg SL (ODT formulation)
- Pediatric (6 months old –14 yo): 0.15 mg/kg IV/PO, max dose of 4 mg (IV Formulation)
- Adult:
- Isopropyl alcohol – Allow patient to inhale vapor from isopropyl alcohol wipe 3 times every 15 minutes as tolerate
- Available to BLS and ALS Providers
- Ondansetron
- If signs of hypovolemia, administer Normal Saline
- Adult: 500 mL IV/IO unless contraindicated (e.g. h/o CHF, renal failure)
- Pediatric: Consider 10 mL/kg IV fluid unless contraindicated (e.g. by potential fluid overload)
- May repeat as indicated
